“Frank and funny and powerful and surprising. An utterly gorgeous debut.”-Lauren Groff

One of the most anticipated books of 2019--Electric Literature, Entertainment Weekly, Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, The Millions, Hyphen, Lit Hub, Nylon, The AV Club, The Advocate, The Rumpus, The Week, Books are Magic, Reading Women, Alma

Acclaimed literary essayist T Kira Madden's raw and redemptive debut memoir is about coming of age and reckoning with desire as a queer, biracial teenager amidst the fierce contradictions of Boca Raton, Florida, a place where she found cult-like privilege, shocking racial disparities, rampant white-collar crime, and powerfully destructive standards of beauty hiding in plain sight.

As a child, Madden lived a life of extravagance, from her exclusive private school to her equestrian trophies and designer shoe-brand name. But under the surface was a wild instability. The only child of parents continually battling drug and alcohol addictions, Madden confronted her environment alone. Facing a culture of assault and objectification, she found lifelines in the desperately loving friendships of fatherless girls.

With unflinching honesty and lyrical prose, spanning from 1960s Hawai'i to the present-day struggle of a young woman mourning the loss of a father while unearthing truths that reframe her reality, Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls is equal parts eulogy and love letter. It's a story about trauma and forgiveness, about families of blood and affinity, both lost and found, unmade and rebuilt, crooked and beautiful.

"A crisp, witty, terror-laden firewalk in utterly beautiful language that Madden seems to have conjured without effort despite its precision and beauty. I was blown away."

Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls A Memoir T Kira Madden 9781635571851 Books Reviews

  • There's nothing quite like this book. T Kira Madden's words move with such urgency, humor, curiosity, and love. She guides the reader with presence and sensitivity through the many fascinating—sometimes devastating, sometimes beautiful; often both—twists and turns of her life. She is remarkably attentive to the color of her memories as she experienced them, down to shifts and changes in her vibrant, life-long infatuation with language. The book is a journay into and through a whole host of overlapping worlds, the many different worlds through which Madden moved in her youth and into adulthood. It's a genuinely frightening, painful journey sometimes; often I laughed out loud; I was always riveted. (There are some real characters in this book, including the city of Boca Raton, FL.) I'm also reminded what friendship can be, what hope is good for, how fiercely a mother can love her daughter, how essential it is to regard your own younger self with respect and generosity and courage. I'm looking forward to revisiting this book and better acquainting myself with its wisdom.
  • T Kira Madden's debut memoir is gritty, honest, vulnerable, and life changing. I am not being hyperbolic when I say reading this book will change your life. Each essay is filled with sentences that will get inside your head and your heart – I was lucky enough to read a review copy of this book back in November and I still find myself going back to certain lines over and over, months later. This book is truly for everyone – for kids who grew up surrounded by both love and addiction, for queer girls, for Floridians, for misfits, for outcasts, for artists, for anyone who has ever loved an addict, for anyone who has ever tried to figure out where they belong in this wild world...T Kira's words will brighten your life. I devoured this book – I think you will, too.
  • This book is so meaningful & precious and touches the depths of my soul for a multitude of reasons. Here’s the short list...Deep wounds, addiction, privilege & scarcity, adoption, inadequacies, queer awakenings, forgiveness, synchronicities, loss of a parent, sexual assault, healing & love, deep, wide love. It’s beautiful, brilliant & courageous writing... Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls!
  • I wanted to quit my job so I wouldn't have to put this down. The essays cover longing, loss, addiction, sexuality and more in the freshest language. I cried. A lot.
  • I just finished this bold and mesmerizing gem. It’s one of the best books I’ve read this year. She has such a gift for making her language both accessible and stunning. She writes about trauma and family and forgiveness and manages to be funny, moving, and self-aware. You will fly through these pages. Don’t sleep on this one.
  • A crisp, witty, terror-laden firewalk in utterly beautiful language that Madden seems to have conjured without effort despite its precision and beauty. I was blown away.
  • WOW!!!! This is the most incredible book I've ever read! I could not put it down. I laughed, cried and was put on an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. Definitely a MUST READ!
  • A beautiful, powerful story. I couldn’t put it down. Full of heartache, but also the will to survive, and love for her family. I just loved it.
